While Twins fans are surely upset that their ace pitcher, Johan Santana, was traded to the Mets last week, I for one am just glad he did not end up either across town in the Bronx or in Boston.  I’m disappointed that such a talented pitcher is heading to such a wealthy team, but at least I won’t see him in pinstripes, because that was my fear a couple of months ago.

after 8 years to approximately $1.5 million.  All of the profits go to charities.

The Johan Santana situation could once again be gaining momentum.  It is said that the Mets are making a stronger push, and the Yankees are leaning towards moving away from a deal.  Yankees officials feel the price to pay in terms of both prospects and money will be too much for the ace lefty.  This is good news for the Red Sox who will not have to face him if they Yankees withdraw from the race, not only because they won't have to face him as many as five times a year, but because that limits the amount of suitors for him to two.  It would be between the Mets and the Red Sox.  The Red Sox would be fine if the Twins take one of their offers that has long been on the table, and would also have no problem if he is shipped off to the other league.

ar) the Red Sox have 6 strong candidates for the rotation next year, and if they make the trade for Santana could have the best rotation in baseball.  Currently, two of the six are over 40, two are going to be 27, and two are under 25.  They are poised to be good for a long time, and have shown the ability to adapt.

ts David Murphy and Engel Beltre.  Coincidentally, those are the positions the trade for Johan Santana are centered around.  If the Red Sox had not made this trade, they could potentially have added the left handed ace already.  None of these prospects are currently as good as Lester or Ellsbury, but they would have a lot more to work with.  Beltre has tremendous potential and could have been used as a piece in the deal with Lester and other prospects or could have been a comfort to the Red Sox organization knowing that in the future they have another player that can make a potentially strong impact.
