The past week has been relatively quiet in the world of the Boston Red Sox. Sure, the team was in the headlines concerning Jim Rice and his 14th attempt at becoming a Hall of Famer but besides that very little has happening in Red Sox Nation. But besides that let's run down what other news has happening concerning the Red Sox.
Former owner Edward "Buddy" LeRoux, died of natural causes this week but his name is not one of prominence in Red Sox Nation, he was only a part time owner during the Yawkey Era. He was probably more important for his role as a trainer from 1966-74 and as the team's vice president in 1978 and 79.
Over the weekend, Boston's Hot Stove, Cool Music was once again a success. It is estimated that the event raised $200,000 putting the total for the event after 8 years to approximately $1.5 million. All of the profits go to charities.
The Johan Santana situation could once again be gaining momentum. It is said that the Mets are making a stronger push, and the Yankees are leaning towards moving away from a deal. Yankees officials feel the price to pay in terms of both prospects and money will be too much for the ace lefty. This is good news for the Red Sox who will not have to face him if they Yankees withdraw from the race, not only because they won't have to face him as many as five times a year, but because that limits the amount of suitors for him to two. It would be between the Mets and the Red Sox. The Red Sox would be fine if the Twins take one of their offers that has long been on the table, and would also have no problem if he is shipped off to the other league.
The only other news that vaguely relates to the Red Sox involves Roger Clemens. His hearing has been pushed back to February 13. This could be bad news for Clemens due to the extended time the congressional panel will have to gather more evidence, and to verify what already exists. It will also slow down any momentum Clemens has in the fight against the charges put against him. He tried on Sunday to shed deflect the criticisms but many in the sporting world feel it only further validates the allegations.
That's all for the Red Sox right now, when there's more you'll see it here.
